In March, Google announced it would no longer allow advertisements from cryptocurrency exchanges. However, ads for Coinbase have again started appearing on the site.
Google’s ban on ads for cryptocurrency exchanges did not last long. The ban, scheduled for this summer, was first announced in March:
It appears the policy lasted less than two months. Though Google has not made any announcements about changes to its policy, ads for Coinbase are now appearing in Google search results.
The policy prohibiting cryptocurrency advertising followed a similar move from Facebook. In January, it announced a policy change that banned advertising for a range of cryptocurrency services. The announcement stated, “ads must not promote financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings, or cryptocurrency.”
It appears both companies are relaxing their stance. First, Facebook revised its policy in June when the company stated it would begin allowing ads for exchanges on a case-by-case basis; advertisers are now required to submit an application seeking approval. Ads for ICOs and binary options, however, are still prohibited.
Last week Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced on Twitter that Coinbase had applied and been approved for advertisements on Facebook. He has made no announcement about Coinbase’s advertisements on Google, the appearance of which remain somewhat mysterious, as Google’s policies page still states that ads “for cryptocurrency and related content” are prohibited.
